Sanity-saving Ideas for Mom

Here are some tried and tested tips for every parent who seeks to make sense of the chaos the comes with parenting:

1. Meet Mommy. The underlying mindset that is projected is as follows: "In as much as they would like to keep things from me, they will not succeed because I will eventually find out." Children's knowledge of these "extra-sensory" powers helps in making them more open and candid. Because they know that there is no point in hiding information from mommy. It is also an icebreaker of sorts presented in a funny manner. Though also known as "mother's intuition", labeling it as "good witch powers" makes it easier and more imaginative for the youngsters to relate to.

2. A little dirt won't hurt. As much as you want our children to be hygienic, you must not overreact when it comes to cleanliness. It goes without saying that frequent hand-washing and a bath every day are musts. But you must bear in mind that children are exposed to germs all throughout the day, therefore, it is not natural to attempt to "germ-proof" your child. Exposure to germs is a natural part of life; it can even help build their immune system. This helps them fight off diseases and make them less susceptible to common ailments.

3. Cheap thrills. Activities with kids need not be a major production number. There are a number of ways that do not entail much effort or money to pull off. Only creativity and energy are required. Here are some bonding activities to get you started:
-Make cards for someone
-Make and fly paper airplanes in the garden
-Paint rocks and use them as paperweights
-Blow bubbles

4. Respect goes both ways. Easy communication is enabled when there is mutual respect. However, parents should not implement an authoritarian rule. By giving them due respect at an early age, you earn their respect, too. This fosters a good relationship between parent and child. Letting them assert their independence by choosing their own clothes, for example, shows them that you value their taste and judgment.

5. Stories for all occasions. Children love hearing stories, whether it be about them when they were smaller or about their parents or other family members when they were younger. Their interest and curiosity are sparked mainly because these are anecdotes about people they are familiar with-a glimpse from a bygone era. More than this, it provides them a remembrance of their roots-a sense of existence and belonging.

6. Art is smart. Children of all ages appreciate creative pursuits. The younger you start your child in the creative process, the more you build upon his innate ability to express himself. Keeping his artworks is a must. If you have a budget for it, framing his works is an added boost to his ego. It also reflects the pride that you have on his work, thus elevating his self-esteem.

7. Let go of over-protectiveness. Parents are always fearful of what may befall their children. However, you cannot be maimed by these fears. You cannot shield your kids from every fall, scratch, fight, or bully. You may unintentionally convey to your kids that they are incapable of handling certain situations when you let inappropriate fears consume you. No parent wishes their children to fail but bear in mind that sometimes, kids need to commit their own mistakes in order to learn. This builds character. Sometimes, it's good to let go.

8. Dual role as teacher and student. Parents have much to learn from their children. Parents do not know everything. Though you serve as children's initial guideposts to their ever curious minds, kids can teach you a thing or two when it comes to life's lessons. Be open to these.

9. Don't lose yourself. Happy mommies make happy homes, and happy homes breed happy children. It is important to prioritize yourself from time to time. As a parent, you wear different hats, and at times, you do so simultaneously. But do not lose sight of the fact that children also learn from osmosis. If you strive to be your own independent self, chances are that your children will grow up to be adults with backbones as well. Parenting is an extension of who you are but you do have interests and talents. Pursue these to make yourself whole.
